My favorite medium for accomplishing a book cover design is digital collage.
It makes my artist’s heart sing because it is a route of discovery and experimentation.
I made this redesign of Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray with the initial idea to collage a portrait, like most of its existing covers.
I ended with a collage of a mirror shape and dried flowers. It became a game of composition, different textures and colors. My favorite cup of tea.
It is not a portrait but it is very much relevant to the book.
The mirror symbolizes vanity. The dried flowers represent the transience of life. Nothing more needed than a final touch of an art-nouveau inspired font.
Voila, my out-of-the-box cover.
